Free Burma

The Australian Greens have long called for democracy in Burma, a small but resource rich country that has been controlled by a brutal military regime since 1962. The Greens joined the international efforts calling for an arms embargo, trade and travel sanctions, and agitating for the freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Laureat and winner of the 1990 elections in Burma who spent 15 of the last 21 years under house arrest until her release in 2010.

The Greens have questioned the Australian government's policy of 'neither encouraging nor discouraging' Australian businesses because investments particularly in Burma's oiil and gas industries, such as that of the Perth based Clough company, have enabled and supported the regime.  While recent reforms are welcome, Burma still has a long way to go before it can be considered democratic.  I remain gravely concerned about the between 493 and 852 political prisoners behind bars and the fact that the army continues to target civilians, commit human rights abuses, and carry out ethnic cleansing, with more than 75,000 ethnic Kachin driven from their homes since June 2011.
