The Australian Greens say the Foreign Affairs Minister must advocate for a diplomatic solution and intensify his nuclear disarmament campaign, after media reports North Korea launched another missile over night.

"The challenge before the international community is ensuring that we hose down tensions, not inflame them," said the Greens Nuclear Spokesperson, Senator Scott Ludlam.

"The Foreign Affairs Minister should argue against the next UN Security Council resolution potentially authorising military action. Given the paranoia of the North Korean regime, this would be utterly counterproductive."

"Engagement is the key to breaking the impasse between North Korea and the international community. We know from recent history that tough talk and threats of military action literally cause explosions."

"The uranium industry regularly suggests that being a major uranium supplier to nuclear weapons states gives Australia leverage in situations like this. Australia's role on non-proliferation and disarmament initiatives is severely compromised by our continued willingness to sell uranium to nuclear weapons states which are in clear breach of their disarmament obligations."

"Engagement must work both ways. The moral authority of the UN Security Council to condemn another state for nuclear testing is blunted when the all of the Permanent Members of the Council possess nuclear weapons themselves."

"The Foreign Minister should step up his nuclear disarmament campaign, arguing for all states to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and encourage engagement with North Korea, to bring about a lasting diplomatic solution," concluded Senator Ludlam.
