Greens push for sustainable cost of living relief

The Australian Greens will move to give cost of living relief to renters today, by amending the government's housing affordability plan.

"Housing affordability is about more than just reducing the cost of a rental. It is also about reducing cost of living expenses, like petrol, electricity and water," said the Greens Housing Spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam.

Senator Ludlam will move amendments to the government's National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) this afternoon.

"I have proposed simple changes to the regulations to ensure that this housing is environmentally sustainable. This will provide a long-term affordability benefit as oil, electricity and water prices rise."

"I encourage both the government and the opposition to support these amendments, so that we can give real relief to renters," said Senator Ludlam.

The move comes after the Greens clocked up a win on housing yesterday, when the Treasurer announced a Transitional Safety Net to provide clarity to community organisations wishing to participate in NRAS.

NRAS faced an uncertain future last week, after a string of adverse rulings from the ATO. The ATO had warned that community organisations participating in the scheme could lose their tax exempt status. The Greens wrote to the Treasurer seeking action and welcomed yesterday's announcement.
