Greens Support National Day of Action Against Internet Censorship

“This weekend we will see an expression around the country of the deep concern about the Government’s plans for internet censorship. I am pleased to be joining the Perth event, to ask the questions: why is the Government pushing internet filtering, and who will watch the watchers?” said Greens spokesperson for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Senator Scott Ludlam.
Protests against the proposed internet filter are set to take place in all capital cities across Australia this Saturday.
“This planned is flawed for its infringement on civil liberties, and for being an unnecessary distraction from the important policy objective of protecting children online.”
Earlier this week the Australian Greens called on the Federal Government to abandon its internet filtering trial as flawed and doomed to failure, whilst Telstra and Internode announced their boycott of the trial.
"The Australian people and internet service providers are sending a clear message to the Government - they don't think mandatory internet filtering will work, and they are repeatedly making clear that they don't want this flawed policy."
Senator Ludlam has questioned Communications Minister Stephen Conroy about the filter in Senate Estimates and Question Time.
“If the government is serious about combating child pornography it needs to invest in initiatives that target the people propagating this material and expose the causes of sexual violence in our society, rather than taking a blanket out of site out of mind approach to the issue, which will inadvertently penalise all Australians who use the internet,” concluded Senator Scott Ludlam.
