“I am proud to take a message of peace to Mayor Akiba on behalf of
Mayor Tagliaferri, who is the only Western Australian member of Mayors
for Peace – a global network of 2,300 mayors and their cities working
towards the total abolition of nuclear weapons,” Senator Ludlam said.

“In Fremantle, we have an active and spirited community and pride
ourselves on a commitment to celebrating harmony and multiculturalism,”
Mayor Tagliaferri said.

“By acknowledging our racial, cultural, social and religious
diversity, we are helping to build a peaceful and productive future,
which is why I support the Mayors for Peace initiative.”

Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of Hiroshima and President of the global
network of Mayors for Peace, has invited Senator Ludlam to attend the
ceremony in the Peace Park marking the 63rd anniversary of the US
attack on Hiroshima.

“I am visiting Hiroshima to attend the World Conference Against the
A & H Bomb, and I’m proud to be from Western Australia - a state
that refuses to exploit its uranium resources, therefore ensuring that
we do not participate in or profit from the nuclear arms race,” Senator
Ludlam concluded.
