The Australian Greens say Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith must call on the Burmese military regime to immediately release democratically elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, in light of disturbing new developments.

Last week it became apparent that the military regime was planning on continuing Aung San Suu Kyis house arrest and on the weekend one of her legal team had his licence to practice law revoked.

"It's clear the Burmese Military regime is stepping up its efforts to stifle political dissent. This requires a swift and decisive response from the international community," said Greens Senator Scott Ludlam, who is co-chair of Australian Parliamentarians for Democracy in Burma.

"The regime is determined to prevent Suu Kyi from participating in the 2010 election, which must not go ahead while so many political leaders are imprisoned, and the prevailing conditions are so repressive. It is time that the Burmese Generals and Judges were hauled before the International Criminal Court, via a UN Security Council resolution."

"Australia has a leadership role to play here. Minister Smith should use his strong relationship with the Chinese Government to request that they cease their support for this illegitimate regime. He should also contact the Burmese military dictatorship directly through their representative in Canberra and demand that they end Aung San Suu Kyi's detention."

"Australia has a moral responsibility to apply every diplomatic effort to this morally bankrupt regime. I will be joining Burmese human rights activists in calling for the Minister to take action, at a rally outside his office today," said Senator Ludlam.
