What independent Non-Proliferation Body?

The Australian Greens questioned the independence of the Australian Safeguards and Non-proliferation Office (ASNO) today due to Director General John Carlson accepting an award from the Australian Nuclear Association (ANA).
"The ANA is a lobby group, contrary to what Mr. Carlson told the Senate Estimates hearing yesterday," said Senator Scott Ludlam, spokesperson on nuclear issues for the Australian Greens.
"One of the aims of the Australian Nuclear Association is ‘To promote the knowledge and practice of the peaceful, safe and effective use of nuclear science and technology.' This is clearly the mandate of a lobby group," said Senator Ludlam.
"Domestic nuclear power is unlawful in Australia (not permitted under the ARPANS Act) Does the Minister for Foreign Affairs, who oversees ASNO, believe that advocating unlawful actions is appropriate behaviour?"
"I would congratulate Mr Carlson, if I thought this award held any true merit or value."
"Australia deserves a reputable, impartial and independent Non-Proliferation body, not the regulatory capture we see today," he concluded.
