Why Radiate when you can Shine?

Media Release | Spokesperson Scott Ludlam
Wednesday 30th July 2008, 12:00am

WA Greens Senator Scott Ludlam will visit Alice Springs on Thursday 31 July to support the campaign against the Angela and Pamela uranium proposal just 21 km south of Alice Springs.

“Why would Alice Springs radiate when it can shine?  This is a solar city, not a uranium quarry.

“Uranium prices are on a slope going down - currently at US$60 per pound, less than half the April 2007 value. In June, Goldman Sachs JBWere indicated that uranium is tipped to drop under US$50 per pound by 2010,” Senator Ludlam said.

“Uranium price volatility wiped out the previous wave of exploration in the late 1990s, and there is no reason this time will be any different.”

Local Greens Candidates, Jane Clark, Linda Chellew and Lenny Aronsten welcome Scott’s visit and hope to highlight the concerns of local residents.

“The Northern Territory Government seem to think they can call a snap election and bulldoze right across the issues raised by the people of Central Australia. We have had no indication that they will ensure the safety of residents and the local environment,” said Braitling candidate Jane Clark.

“Our water is at risk, as is the health of hundreds of communities across central Australia.  To drill countless uranium exploration shafts so close to a major urban centre is irresponsible.”

Senator Ludlam will be available for media and will hold a roadside press conference at the Old South Rd turn off at 4:30pm Thursday 31 July - please contact Derek on 0427 826 026
