The Australian Greens welcomed the announcements today that NBN Co has settled on a fixed wireless network partner and sealed a construction deal to roll out the National Broadband Network for a mid-2012 service start.
"This process obviously wasn't as smooth as it could have been, but we're pleased to see the tenders awarded at last," Greens communications spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam said today.
"This leaves final agreement with Telstra as the key outstanding issue preventing the rollout from getting properly under way, and we look forward to the speedy resolution of that issue."
"The National Broadband Network is a key piece of 21st century infrastructure, and the Greens will continue to play a constructive role as the project proceeds."
The rollout of fast broadband to Australians in rural and regional areas should be complete by 2015, with the first fixed wireless services to be available from the middle of next year.
