Indigenous Rights

Aboriginal Australians, regardless of whether they live in urban, rural or remote areas, are the most marginalised and disadvantaged group in Australia … and yet Australian Governments of both persuasions continue to ignore their needs.

The Federal Government has ignored the plight of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities for over a decade, systematically de-funding basic community services and development programs, and stripping away all representative sturctures to give them no say in the decisions which impact upon their lives.

Senator LUDLAM-Communications from-I will give you the names in particular. There is a number of family groups, I am sure you would be aware, responsible for landscape under the Muckaty Land Trust-in particular, the Ngapa, the Millway, the Ngarrka, Wantagu and the Yapa Yapa family groups. I have probably mangled the pronunciation. Are you aware of representations within those groups?

Mr Davoren-Yes, we have prepared draft responses to some of those representations, Senator.

Senator LUDLAM-Can you identify for us, perhaps on notice-we will not put you through doing that now-those communications? I am not asking you to table the communications themselves, but the dates and the order in which they were received and transmitted.

Ms Taylor-We would have to take that on notice.

A rare opportunity to speak directly with the Office of the Supervising Scientist, the regulators of uranium mining in the Alligator Rivers Region, which includes the Ranger and Jabiluka mineral leases in the NT.

Tuesday 21 October 2008

Senator LUDLAM—Welcome, Mr Hughes. I am glad that we got to you eventually. Thanks for coming all this way. Some of these are probably going to get technically fairly complex, so by all means we can put things on notice if you think it is going to take too much time to run through it in detail. Can you give us an overview of the environmental research and monitoring projects that are currently underway under the Supervising Scientist, and their costings, and give us an idea of what criteria you use, both in the OSS office but also in the Alligator Rivers Region Technical Committee, for setting your research project priorities?

Barnett must back off Kimberley land grab

Media Release | Spokesperson Scott Ludlam
Wednesday 15th October 2008, 5:37pm

The Australian Greens say WA Premier Colin Barnett is tearing up years of consultation by threatening to compulsorily acquire land in the Kimberley for the gas industry.

"Threatening Aboriginal communities with compulsory acquisition of their land is a backward, coercive and profoundly unhelpful approach for the new Premier to take. There is no need for Barnett's heavy handed attack on the integrity of the discussions that have been under way for some time," said Senator Scott Ludlam.
