Greens win Senate order for key Perth Freight Link documents

The Senate has ordered the Federal Government to produce key documents relating to the Perth Freight Link, supporting a Greens' motion moved by Senator Scott Ludlam this afternoon.

"The WA and federal government have committed more than $1.6 billion of taxpayers' money to an unplanned, maligned and destructive freight freeway that will disfigure suburbs across Perth's southern suburbs, and they've done so without producing any meaningful reports or data to justify their position," Senator Scott Ludlam said today.

Senate Inquiry into arts funding begins in Melbourne

“The mood of arts organisations has moved substantially from shock to anger. People want to know why this is happening and why they're being forced to cut staff, sack people or cancel touring schedules.”

“The mood is actually very bleak, not just because of the amount of money that has been shifted, but the fact that from now on, George Brandis and his little hand-picked selection committees will be able to make funding decisions about touring schedules and arts funding in general.

Susiya must stand: Australia must break its silence

The Greens have urged Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop to join with her counterparts in the United States and the EU in calling on Israeli authorities to not proceed with the wholesale demolition of the Palestinian village of Kirbet Susiya in the southern West Bank.

"The proposed destruction of this village is unjustifiable. It has sparked international attention and outrage, and it is time the Australian Government broke its silence," Greens foreign affairs spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam said.

Greens statement on the anniversary of the MH17 disaster

A year ago today, the world was shocked when a passenger plane was shot out of the sky over eastern Ukraine.

The MH17 tragedy cost the lives of 283 passengers and 15 crew. 38 Australians were amongst those who lost their lives.

Our thoughts today are with the families in Australia and around the world whose lives were so terribly impacted by this event, and whose grief must be all too fresh.

The Greens continue to urge and hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, so that other families may be spared the pain and loss caused by this senseless act.

Greens call on government to end political cowardice over negative gearing

The Australian Greens have welcomed the Reserve Bank of Australia's call for a review of negative gearing and capital gains tax, with Senator Scott Ludlam today saying Joe Hockey should have a serious conversation about ending unnecessary and unfair tax breaks.

"The RBA's announcement sends a clear signal to Joe Hockey and Tony Abbott to get out of the way of a real discussion about structural unfairness in the tax system," Senator Ludlam, Australian Greens acting leader said.
