Buswell needs to come clean on Federal funding for transport

Media Release
Scott Ludlam 1 Mar 2013

The Barnett Government must reveal the details of their Federal transport funding requests in the wake of Troy Buswell's admission that the Commonwealth will need to pay more than half the cost of the Liberals' promised big transport projects, the Greens said today.

On February 7th Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam attempted to uncover the details of the State's light rail funding application to Infrastructure Australia, only to be told they were confidential.

"It was revealed that the State Government had insisted their application for Federal funding be kept a secret - why?

"The people of Western Australia have a right to know if the State Government is serious about its transport promises - particularly light rail and an airport rail link - yet Treasurer Buswell and Premier Barnett have kept us in the dark on the detail. Now they admit they'll need to ask the Commonwealth to pick up the majority of the costs," said Senator Ludlam.

Greens WA transport spokesperson Lynn MacLaren MLC said "Mr Barnett and Mr Buswell are experts at flogging Canberra with one hand while begging for money with the other".

"Why has it taken months for Mr Buswell to admit he will need the Commonwealth to foot half the bill of his big promises? Why does the State Government continue to keep their application for Federal funding a secret? It is just not good enough.

"The Greens have long campaigned for improved public transport and for the State Government to be open and accountable about their transport policies. Now we know Mr Buswell expects the Federal Government to put its money where his mouth is."
