Greens condemn miscarriage of justice

Australian Greens foreign affairs spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam today condemned the conviction of Peter Greste.

 “Journalism is not a crime,” said Senator Ludlam.

“This entire situation has been one injustice after another and this verdict ensures that Peter and his fellow journalists will carry the stain of that injustice for the rest of their lives.

 “Not only has Peter been locked up for doing his job, he has expressed concern that a criminal record resulting from today's conviction may make it difficult for him to continue his career as a foreign correspondent.

 “Our thoughts are with Peter Greste and the other journalists who have been caught up in this mess. “The Greens will continue to take up every opportunity to defend the freedom of the press, without fear of favour.”
