As Gaza moves towards collapse, Australia remains silently complicit

Australian Greens foreign affairs spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam has accused the Australian government of unforgivable silence over the blockade of Gaza, in light of a UN statement today that the area will become uninhabitable by 2020 if the current economic conditions there continue.

"Ordinary Palestinians have been caught up in this political siege for too long," Senator Ludlam said.

 “Journalism is not a crime,” said Senator Ludlam.

SHOCK: Infrastructure Australia release Perth Freight Link assessment

The Australian Greens have noted the long-anticipated release of Infrastructure Australia's sketchy assessment of the Perth Freight Link project.

"We can understand now why the Barnett Government is so reluctant to release information about the Freight Link. Every time someone does, it damages the case," Senator Scott Ludlam said today.

"The assessment reveals that the Barnett government did not bother to compare the Freight Link with the costs and benefits of developing a dedicated road and rail link to the Outer Harbour in Cockburn Sound.

Australian Greens' statement on Sri Lankan elections

"The Australian Greens welcome the outcome of the Sri Lankan election, which has seen former president Mahinda Rajapaksa fail to return to power as the country's prime minister," Senator Scott Ludlam said today.

"I hope that this signals a new chapter for this nation which has been plagued by horrific civil war, war crimes and crimes against humanity, forced disappearances and ongoing human rights abuses that are currently under investigation by the United Nations.

Future Forests

Our precious South West forests are under threat from logging like never before. 600 year old trees are being cut down for woodchips under Barnett. Most Western Australians don’t support logging in our native forests. Only the Greens are standing up for our forests, with a plan to create secure jobs in the South West.

WA’s native forests are well loved and extremely valuable. According to a recent report, we could earn more from managing our native forests as carbon stores, than we currently do from logging them.

Chernobyl: 26 years on

Chernobyl was the first, and until Fukushima, only major nuclear accident to reach Level 7 on the 7-point International Nuclear Events scale (INES).

Despite efforts by the International Atomic Energy Agency to play down the disaster as a one-off resulting from poor work practices in the former Soviet Union, the world today is contemplating the ruins of a second reactor complex on Japan's Pacific Coast.
