The Senate notes:

1.    The concern of communities in South Australia and Western Australia about their land and water being threatened by shale and other unconventional gas mining.

2.    That landholders lack the legal right to refuse shale and other unconventional gas mining on their land.

3.    The scientific uncertainty surrounding the environmental and health implications of hydraulic fracturing ('fracking') for shale and other unconventional gas mining.

The Australian Greens have called for the reinstatement of the moratorium on GM crops in WA and changes to the laws governing liability and food labelling in order to protect the choices of farmers and consumers across the state.

WA Greens Senators Rachel Siewert and Scott Ludlam and Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren are joining thousands of Western Australians today in support of organic farmer Steve Marsh.

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam was in Collie today talking with locals about the Greens' plans for Collie as a renewable energy generation hub.

Senator Ludlam, who earlier this year released Energy 2029 - a costed, technical plan for how WA's main electricity grid could switch to 100% renewable energy generation - said Collie should be one of five regional Renewable Energy Zones as it had key attributes that made it the right place to generate renewable energy.

The Greens today launched a plan to address the affordable housing crisis by creating a new local prefabricated housing industry in WA's South West.

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam said the manufacture and installation of prefabricated housing made with local sustainable plantation timber will be a boost for local jobs, while delivering much-needed housing.

Senator Ludlam made the announcement today in Bunbury, home to WA's largest pine sawmill at Dardanup.

Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam will join protestors rallying in Fremantle tomorrow - Saturday 17 August - against the controversial method of underground gas extraction known as fracking.

"The WA Parliamentary Inquiry into hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking' announced this week is a good idea given the Barnett Government's plans to massively ramp up this industry in the Mid-West, Kimberley and elsewhere in WA," Senator Ludlam said.

Debate around gas and oil development and the implications of Labor's Northern Territory tax plan misses the main question about Western Australia's energy future, The Greens said today.

"While the Premier attacks the Prime Minister for supposedly threatening his gas ambitions, and Kevin Rudd talks about making Perth an oil and gas headquarters, both Labor and the Liberals are ignoring Western Australia's huge solar potential," said Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam.

A moratorium must be placed on hydraulic gas fracking at least until a Parliamentary inquiry on the impact of fracking on land and groundwater is completed, the Greens warned today.

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam welcomed the news the State Parliament will conduct the inquiry, but said it would be "reckless to allow fracking to continue when the Government admits it doesn't know what damage it can cause".

Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam was in Kalgoorlie today convening a meeting of business and industry leaders to plan the Goldfields' renewable energy future.

Senator Ludlam organised the meeting with leading American solar energy company SolarReserve, the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the local Chamber of Minerals and Energy, and other interested parties.
