Citizenship bill unworkable: Greens

The Australians Greens have condemned the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security’s (PJCIS) report on the Australian Citizenship Amendment (Allegiance to Australia) Bill 2015.

Greens Deputy Leader Senator Scott Ludlam said that the committee ignored expert evidence and shirked its responsibilities by continuing to support key planks of the Government’s unworkable citizenship laws.

“Despite making 27 recommendations, that offer slight improvements of the original Bill, the framework of this irreparably flawed Bill remains intact,” Senator Ludlam said.

Dodging Questions on Crimes Against Humanity

Senator Scott Ludlam asked the Attorney-General, upon notice, on 10 July 2014:

With reference to indefinite detention of asylum seekers:

(1) How does the indefinite detention of asylum seekers comply with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and with Section 268.12 of the Criminal Code (Cth).

(2) Can the Attorney-General confirm receipt of almost 300 letters and emails from members of the Combined Refugee Action Group (CRAG) calling for a stop to arbitrary detention and seeking answers to the question referred to in paragraph 1.
