Greens welcome continued copyright protection for Australian writers and publishers

The Australian Greens welcomed confirmation today that the Rudd Government will not be removing parallel importation protection for books published in Australia, in a great victory for Australia's writers, publishers, printers and book-lovers.

The push to remove the protection came from supermarket booksellers and was opposed by the great majority of Australia's publishers, booksellers and writers. The Greens were pleased to support the campaign throughout.

14,000 clean, green jobs; not backwards-looking buffoonery

While a small number of politicians have made a last-minute dash to join the Flat Earth Club,  the Australian Greens have welcomed a new report that has found wave energy could employ more than 14,000 Australians by 2050.

The report by Fremantle-based, Australian company, Carnegie Corporation Ltd and WWF says building 1,500MW of wave energy power stations by 2020 would create 3,210 Australian jobs and create enough energy to power 1.2 million households. By 2050, 14,380 jobs could be created, producing 12,000MW of clean, renewable power.

Greens ‘New Century’ Australia Senate Agenda

The Australian Greens today outlined their vision for Australia in the new century ahead of the opening of the Balance-of-Power Senate.

Australian Greens Leader, Senator Bob Brown, said a record 1.17 million people voted Greens at the last election, and the five Greens Senators were ready to work constructively with all parties to respond to the challenges of the new century.

"Pollution, poverty, discrimination and the destruction of Australia's forests and precious environments are the legacy of the last century and decades of greed and inaction."
