Tony Abbott: the Lycra cyclist who won’t fund bike paths

The Australian Greens have called on the Australian Government to spend a fraction of its multi-billion annual transport budget on building bike paths - an area of transport infrastructure ignored by both the older parties.

"The Greens' plan for an $80 million national annual funding program for cycling would come from unallocated funds in the Nation Building Two program, and will not affect funding for safety-related road projects," Australian Greens Infrastructure Spokesperson, Senator for WA Scott Ludlam said.

Greens announce bike app and funding for Bunbury

Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam will visit Bunbury this Saturday 15 June to announce a costed Greens plan for fixing dangerous cycling routes and infrastructure in the Greater Bunbury area.

Senator Ludlam will also be launching a Bike Blackspot phone app and website, for Bunbury cyclists to identify further cycle routes needing improvement.

“The Greens are serious and passionate about giving people a safe option for riding their bike to work or school,” Senator Ludlam, a cycle-commuter himself, said.

One year of inaction on bike blackspot ends with cyclist in hospital

More than one year after warning Transport Minister Troy Buswell to fix a Perth cycling blackspot, a cyclist has been hospitalised after a crash at the very same site.

Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam developed the bike blackspot smartphone app used to report the site to Minister Buswell.

"Cyclist Travis Deane told the Minister in writing that this cycling blind-spot needed mirrors on May 3rd last year. Today there are still no mirrors and he broke bones in a front-on collision with another cyclist," said Senator Ludlam.
