Liberal MP Dennis Jensen's nuclear obsession will put Western Australia at risk, the Greens warned today.

Senator for WA Scott Ludlam said Dr Jensen's push for Australia to acquire nuclear submarines and to turn Western Australia into a "high-traffic service station" for American nuclear vessels was "counter-factual and dangerous".

"Successive governments have indulged in a series of expensive debacles chasing military hardware - the Member for Tangney wants to continue that dubious tradition by pursuing second-hand American nuclear submarines.

With Japanese Authorities declaring the worsening situation at Fukushima an "emergency", Labor candidate for Perth Alannah MacTiernan has made a baffling pitch for nuclear power to stay in contention for Australia's energy mix.

"The nuclear industry is falling apart worldwide in the wake of Fukushima, the global financial crisis, uncontrollable costs, and overwhelming competition from renewable energy," Greens Senator Scott Ludlam said today. Senator Ludlam will debate Ms MacTiernan tonight in Perth.

The Australian Greens have called for hundreds of Australian soldiers who were exposed to radiation from British nuclear bomb testing in the 1950s and ‘60s to automatically receive Veterans' Gold Card health care.

"Between 1952 and 1963, more than 16,000 Australian civilians and serviceman were exposed to nuclear fallout when British nuclear weapons were tested at the Montebello Islands in Western Australia, Maralinga and Emu fields in South Australia, and over the Christmas and Malden Islands," spokesperson Assisting on Defence, Senator Scott Ludlam said.

The Australian Greens welcomed new Future Fund chief David Gonski today and urged him to hit the ground running by cutting the Fund's links to nuclear weapons.

Greens spokesperson for nuclear policy Senator Scott Ludlam said that as of January 2012, the Fund holds more than $133million of shares in 14 companies involved in nuclear weapons programs.

The Australian Government must end uranium sales to Russia if it is serious about stopping Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, the Australian Greens said today.

The Australian Government must end its support for the maintenance of the United States' nuclear arsenal and take a genuine stand against nuclear weapons, the Australian Greens said today.

Greens spokesperson on nuclear affairs Senator Scott Ludlam said the revelation the Australian Defence Department had urged the US to keep nuclear weapons in a confidential submission to a 2009 US review exposed "a stunning betrayal of nuclear disarmament efforts by our country".
